Downtown Keremeos

Keremeos is located at the crossroads of BC Highway 3 and 3A, you’ll see it when you start seeing the dozens of fruit stands along the roads. The well-known Okanagan-grown produce, such as apples, cherries, peaches, pears and more are grown in this warm, dry town, with much of their produce being shipped across BC, giving Keremeos the honour of being both the “fruit stand capital of Canada” and, thanks to its ever-blowing winds to keep pests and mildew away, the “organic fruit stand capital of Canada”.

Keremeos is one of the larger towns in the Similkameen Valley, with many places to visit including the vast Cathedral Provincial Park and Cathedral Lakes Resort, the Red Bridge, which is a popular launching point for floating down the Similkameen River, the Grist Mill and dozens of lakes and campsites. There is a natural and wholesome way of living here, with the entire horizon as your backyard. The people living here are hard-working, with many of them working with horses and cattle on the several ranches surrounding the area.

 Keremeos Map

With a population of 1500, Keremeos is the perfect location for people looking to move to Small Town BC. There are several festivals throughout the year, including the Keremeos Elks Rodeo and the Similkameen Sizzlin’ Pepper Festival, and an endless supply of fresh, local food at your disposal in a town where your neighbours are your friends and life moves at your own pace.

Keremeos History

In 1864 the first settler of European descent to move to Keremeos permanently was F.X. Richter, who moved from Oregon with his family, bringing 42 heads of cattle along with him. In 1884 Richter sold his ranch and planted the Similkameen Valley’s first commercial apple orchard, steering the town’s success from farming and herding to what Keremeos is know for most today. By 1893 there were sixteen homesteads in the area, including a school, a hotel, and a general store, and in 1904 its very own sawmill.

In 1907 the first train came to Keremeos, via the Kettle Valley Railway, and the now award-winning Keremeos apples were able to reach customers from even farther distances. More people began working in the orchard business, helping create the legacy that Keremeos is known for today.
